You’ve decided you want maternity photos (yay! 🎉). But now you’re probably wondering: When is the best time to actually do them?
The short answer? There’s a sweet spot—and it’s all about finding the balance between showing off your beautiful bump and still feeling comfortable.
The “Golden Window” ✨
Most photographers (myself included!) recommend scheduling your maternity session between 28–34 weeks of pregnancy.
Here’s why:
- By this point, your bump is beautifully round and really showing.
- You’ll likely still have enough energy and mobility to walk, pose, and enjoy the experience.
- You’re usually not quite at the stage where you feel super uncomfortable or “over it” (though let’s be real, we’ve all been there by the end 😅).
But Every Pregnancy Is Different
Not everyone’s journey looks the same, and that’s okay!
- If you’re carrying multiples, you might want to book a little earlier since your bump will pop sooner and your comfort level might change faster.
- If you know your baby may arrive early, it’s always better to be safe and book sooner rather than later.
- If you’re feeling great late into pregnancy—you can totally stretch past 34 weeks, just know it’s a little more of a gamble with timing and comfort.
When to Reach Out to Book 📅
The actual booking should happen well before your third trimester. Many photographers (especially during busy seasons) book up months in advance, so reaching out around 20 weeks is ideal. That way, you’ll have plenty of options for dates and won’t feel stressed trying to squeeze something in last-minute.

Final Thought
At the end of the day, maternity sessions are about celebrating you and this incredible season of life. The exact week isn’t as important as capturing the love, excitement, and anticipation you’re feeling right now.
So don’t overthink it—just reach out, get on the calendar, and we’ll make sure your bump gets the spotlight it deserves. 🤍
