What should we wear?
And honestly? It’s a great question.

As a newborn photographer in Star, Idaho, I’ve helped hundreds of families choose outfits that photograph beautifully while still feeling comfortable and true to who they are. Here are my favorite tips to help make outfit planning simple and stress-free.
Start With Mom’s Outfit First
Moms are usually the hardest to dress after having a baby, so I always recommend starting with your outfit first and building everyone else’s around it.
Look for pieces that:
- Are comfortable and easy to move in
- Flatter your postpartum body
- Have soft, flowy fabrics
- Make you feel confident and beautiful
Some favorite options include:
- Long dresses
- Maxi dresses
- Sweaters with skirts
- Soft neutral tops paired with jeans
Remember, this season of life isn’t about fitting into pre-pregnancy clothes. It’s about celebrating the incredible work your body just did bringing your baby into the world.
Stick With Soft, Neutral Colors
Neutral colors keep the focus where it belongs: on your family’s connection and your sweet new baby.
Some of my favorite colors for newborn sessions include:
- Cream
- Ivory
- Beige
- Taupe
- Soft gray
- Dusty blue
- Sage green
- Mauve
- Blush pink
These colors photograph beautifully in my studio and create timeless images you’ll love for years to come.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans.
Instead, choose a color palette and mix coordinating tones and textures throughout the family.
For example:
- Mom: Cream dress
- Dad: Light gray henley
- Big sister: Mauve dress
- Baby: Cream wrap
Everything complements each other without looking overly matched.
Keep Dad’s Outfit Simple
Most dads appreciate keeping things easy.
I recommend:
- Neutral henleys
- Solid-colored sweaters
- Button-down shirts
- Simple crew-neck shirts
Avoid:
- Bright colors
- Graphic tees
- Logos
- Athletic wear
The simpler dad’s outfit is, the more timeless your photos will feel.
Dress Siblings Like Themselves
The goal is for your older children to feel comfortable and confident.
For girls:
- Simple dresses
- Soft textures
- Neutral colors
For boys:
- Khakis
- Neutral pants
- Henleys
- Button-down shirts
Try to avoid character clothing, neon colors, and large logos that can distract from the connection in your images.
Think About Your Home Decor
One of my favorite tips is to consider where you’ll display your images.
If your home is filled with neutral colors, soft textures, and natural tones, choosing coordinating outfits will help your artwork blend beautifully into your space.
Many of my clients invest in framed wall art or heirloom albums, so planning with your home’s style in mind can make a big difference.
Less Is More
When in doubt, keep it simple.
Simple outfits create timeless photographs that won’t look dated years from now.
The most important thing isn’t what you’re wearing.
It’s the way your baby curls into your chest.
The way your toddler wraps their arms around their new sibling.
