How to Prepare for Your Studio Newborn Session: A Treasure Valley Parent’s Checklist

by | Dec 30, 2025 | Blog

Bringing your tiny human into the world is a big deal—so first, congratulations, mama (and dad too)! If you’re planning a studio newborn session here in the Treasure Valley, you’re probably excited… and maybe a little overwhelmed. Totally normal. The good news? Preparing for your newborn photos doesn’t have to feel like another item on the “new baby survival list.”

Here’s a simple, relatable checklist to help you walk into your session feeling confident, calm, and ready to soak up the sweetest memories.

🍼 1. Plan Your Session Within the Ideal Window

Newborn photos are usually best between 7–14 days old, when baby is still extra sleepy and curled up.
If your baby is a little older—no stress. I work with babies of all ages and can adapt the session to your little one’s comfort and temperament.

🤍 2. Feed Baby Right Before You Arrive

A full tummy = a sleepy, content baby.
Either feed at home right before you leave or plan to arrive early and feed in the studio. There’s no rush—your session includes plenty of time for breaks, feeds, and snuggles.

🧘‍♀️ 3. Keep Baby Cozy

If possible, dress baby in a loose zip or snap onesie so we can easily transition them without waking them up. Avoid anything that has to be pulled over the head.

Pro tip: keep the diaper a little loose to avoid red marks on baby’s skin.

💆‍♀️ 4. Don’t Stress About Baby Acne, Peeling, or Fussiness

Every newborn has their own quirks, and I promise:
Nothing surprises me. Nothing stresses me out. Nothing is “wrong” or “too much.”

Peeling skin, little scratches, baby acne, cluster feeding—it’s all normal and photographable. I gently pose your baby in ways that flatter them and use soft, natural editing to keep their skin looking like them, just a bit extra dreamy.

🧺 5. Bring the Essentials

Here’s a simple checklist to pack:

  • Extra bottles or the ability to nurse on demand

  • Extra diapers & wipes

  • A pacifier (even if baby doesn’t normally take one—they can be magic!)

  • Burp cloths

  • Snacks for parents (trust me!) – while I provide some snacks and drinks – bring your favorite must have!

  • Any special items you want photographed (blanket, heirloom, tiny stuffy, etc.)

Everything else—props, wraps, headbands, hats, outfits—I provide in-studio.

👗 6. Prepare Your Own Wardrobe

Studio lighting is soft and flattering, so stick to neutral tones, cozy textures, and simple patterns. Think creams, taupes, soft pastels, grays—anything that won’t distract from your sweet baby.

If you’re postpartum and still finding your new normal (aka all of us), choose something flowy that makes you feel comfortable and supported. Your little love is the focus so most all family portraits are usually waist up- so be comfortable!

Spoiler: you don’t need to look “put together.” Motherhood looks beautiful in every version.

🛋 7. Expect a Warm, Relaxed Studio Experience

Newborn sessions are slow-paced by design. That means:

  • Plenty of breaks

  • A warm, cozy environment for baby

  • Calming white noise

  • Soft, sleepy posing

  • Time for you to breathe, unwind, or even take a tiny nap while I work my magic

You’re not just getting photos—you’re getting a little moment of peace.

📸 8. Trust the Process

Some babies sleep the whole time. Some babies want snuggles. Some babies want to supervise the session like a tiny, adorable manager.

Whatever your baby brings that day, I’ll follow their lead. Safety and comfort come first—always.

❤️ Final Thoughts

Preparing for your studio newborn session shouldn’t feel stressful. My goal is to make this experience easy, calm, and full of memories you’ll treasure forever. Whether you’re in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Kuna, or anywhere in the Treasure Valley—your baby’s story deserves to be beautifully told.
